7 Thoughts on 2013

Chris Marlow —  December 27, 2012 — 5 Comments

I’m writing as rain falls from the heavens, I hear the drops and splats as I look into the grey dreary sky. My family from Austin is getting ready to return home today and more family arrives tomorrow.

My mind is beginning to shift. Each year, I take the week in-between Christmas and New Years to pray, plan and prepare for 2013. As you can see, I have five major categories that (in my opinions) all deeply intertwined with one-another.

As I write my thoughts on paper, questions, doubts and insecurities are streaming through my mind, such as…

  • Will I ever get physically healthy? Exercise, eating, etc!
  • Can I make the transition and become a professional writer? (this has never been a dream of mine!)
  • Can we continue to move Help One Now forward and make the global impact that we desperately crave? (hence, why I write)
  • In the midst of the chaos of life… how do I make sure that my connection with God and family are priority?
  • And money… of course!

How do I take these five categories and make sure they flow together and are executed at a high-level?

Seven Thoughts on 2013

1) I want to start the new year having to trust in God. I want my goals to be big enough that my faith is forced to grow. Yet, I also want my goals to be reachable. I need to find the middle-ground, where I’m begging for God to come through, but I’m also planning with wisdom and reality!

2) If I reach my goals will the world be better?  Not, “will I be better, only!” Jesus-followers are called to love their God and neighbor, that is priority and mission. Everything I do revolves around the quest to obey Scripture.

3) I wonder, how can I get it all done? So much to do, so many needs and so little time.  I must prioritize with relentless focus and yet leave margin to enjoy the journey!

4) None of these goals can be accomplished alone. I need mentors, coaches and teams to help me (and for me to help them) move these goals forward.

5) I’m not a fan of dreamers, but I’m a huge fan of doers who have a dream. (Tweet That if you agree) Dreams add little value, doers change the world and make an impact.  I’m obsessed with surrounding myself with doers. People who are passionate about taking the dream and working hard to see if come alive.

6) Wise people understand that you can’t plan life on paper. We are not in control. All of these plans can blow-up and are beyond my control. The plan is not an idol. These plans are a compass, but if life takes crazy turns… I need to prepare myself for that possibility and adapt on the fly!

7) I will fail. It is a non-option. If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. Be ready to fall and get up, again and again!

 Living the Dream in 2013

I hope and pray that 2013 is a great year, one with meaning and purpose. Obstacles will need to be overcome, resistance will have to be fought and hard decisions will be made.  But each day is an opportunity to move the needle forward. Which is all any of us can do or ask for.

Everyday is a building-block for success and meaning. Some days will be amazing, while others day will be discouraging. But in the end, each day is vital to ensuring 2013 goals and dreams are accomplished!

Finishing Well.

Missional people, in general, thrive to take advantage of time. The Bible tells us to number our days. God has given you and me a mission to accomplish, a calling to live out and gifts and passions to move forward and see fruit through our actions. The question is this: How does our calling become tangible; living, and real? When I first started  H.E.L.P. I use to agonize over this. For MANY months I had little tangible evidence of God working. I was focused on the stateside operations: funding, legal, etc.  I wanted desperately to H.E.L.P. our friends in Zimbabwe who we’re suffering deeply. That was the reason we started H.E.L.P.

I lost sleep, worried and felt guilty.  But, I realized something along the way….

Change happens through focused work that is concise and intentional. The ONE thing we all share in this world is time, we all draw from the same bucket, no one has an advantage.  How we leverage our time to fulfill our callings is determined by our willingness to steward our time well. And if we do, we will see the life-altering fruit from our daily actions and work ethics.

Focused, intentional work has a snow-ball-like effect. The best decision you may ever make is to realize the power of showing up each day and working hard. This is what separates the doers from the dreamers.

I really enjoyed Brad’s recent blog post, so many nuggets in there. We all have to finish. We have to complete and “ship” work.

Write, edit and post = work done on this blog post.
Pray, study and preach = work done and lives impacted.
Storyboard, design, code, publish = work done and a website that is live.

And this is the importance of Friday. If we only have five days of work,  we need to ensure that each Friday we finish strong, we focus hard and we work well.

On Friday’s, it’s easy to think about the weekend, it’s easy to begin to slack-off, it’s easy to push things to Monday. But, when it’s all said and done, it’s better to finish strong and then rest deeply on the weekends.

Every Friday we get a chance to practice the discipline of finishing. So today, let’s finish strong!

Habits are vital to productivity. Creating bad habits usually means really negative things happen.
If you eat bad, your body suffers. If you’re unorganized and fail to pay your bills, your credit suffers, if you don’t spend time with God, your spiritual life suffers…etc.

If you create good habits, you can maximize life and opportunities. Life is filled with opportunities, when they come, we have to be prepared to take advantage of them. This is why forming good habits is essential in life.

Here are some habits that I’ve changed lately.

  • Sleep: I used to stay up late (1AM) and wake-up early (6AM-ish) almost every night. I don’t like to sleep, so my natural tendency is to avoid it at all cost. However, there would be many days that I felt tired and unfocused mentally. Now, for the most part, I almost always go to bed at 11PM, and I feel much better.
  • Prayer: When I wake, I usually read scripture, pray and read a chapter in a book. However, recently I started praying over my calendar. I want God to be in control and I want to ask God to be in the details of life. And, I always want to be “Spirit-led” when I’m meeting with people.
  • Writing: I used to write when ever I was “inspired” to write. Now, I write one blog-post a day. That post may never go public, but if I’m going to hit my blogging goals, I have to create enough content. So, I write daily, usually early in the morning or late at night.

I’m still struggling with some bad habits. Especially finding time to consistently work-out and eat healthy…But I feel like I’m on the right pathway!

Creating good habits is essential and holistic. I don’t want to be controlled by life, matter-of-fact, I want to control the outcomes in my life, by creating healthy habits that will help me steward my time well and accomplish my life’s mission!

Yesterday I spent close to seven hours replying to email. The last few months I’ve had this pent of tension, almost anxiety as I’ve allowed my two inboxes to collect over 2400 emails. I had no clue what emails were important and what emails could be deleted.

Email changed a lot for me in 2010. It’s not that I get a ton of email. The problem now; each email is connected to an action step or a key question that needs to be researched or thought-through. Of course, all the travel creates it’s own set of complexity with email management!

Finally I gave up. I sifted through them as quickly as possible hoping to locate the important emails. Then I archived the rest. I can’t tell you how good that felt. I’m FREE!!!

The lesson is simple. Sometimes you have to start over. You have to hit delete. It’s good for productivity. I may have to apologize to a few people whom I did not respond to. But, It’s worth it.

Now I can do better moving forward!

Daily Productivity

Chris Marlow —  January 7, 2009 — Leave a comment

Productivity is a never ending frustration for most of us. Trying to manage our lives is complex and tiring. But it must be done. I’ve struggled to be productive in December. I assume it was the travel and holidays. But I did fail to execute one of my key philosophies of my daily rhythm.

Usually every morning I write down my three key action items of the day. So for today its:

1. Prepare for Help End Local Poverty’s strategy meeting that I have for tomorrow.
2. Clear email inbox. (It’s been weeks)
3. Make sure all key docs get sent to the printer. (which is basically delegated)

Those are my big action items that I must get done. Then I write a secondary list:

1. Write blog post.
2. Read 2 chapters of a book. (this is research and education for non-profit)
3. Send emails to key contacts.
4. Study for a future article I’m writing on poverty.

I use Things as my key organizer. things_feature_iphoneEvery morning I take a look at all that needs to get done and make decisions on today’s agenda. For me this is really helpful. If I do this on a consistent basis I tend to feel good about my rhythm but not overwhelmed, yet I’m productive and efficient.
