I’m Thankful

Chris Marlow —  November 24, 2011 — Leave a comment

I’m thankful for…

  • Jesus, the cross and the redeemed life He allows me to live.
  • For my family… their amazing!
  • For my friends… their amazing!
  • For my staff. They do amazing work, they sacrifice deeply for the sake of serving others. I’m grateful for them!
  • For  the H.E.L.P. tribe. Those who go, give, love, pray, serve and advocate to help rescue orphans, restore their hope and renew their communities. We’re making an impact on so many lives!!!
  • Our global partners and friends. They are my heroes who do amazing work each and everyday.
  • Missional minded friends: Those who live their lives for the sake of others, those who make the world better by their actions, gifts, passions and choices.
  • Living in Raleigh, NC: I love the city, state and region. So excited to do life in this region.
May we all pause, rest, reflect, pray, laugh, eat well, and celebrate well today!

Family, Life and Rest

Chris Marlow —  November 29, 2009 — 2 Comments

We spent the last 3 days in Asheville, NC. Got to be honest, it was three of the best days we’ve had as a family in a long time. We did nothing but play, laugh, and eat. It felt good to just relax with no agenda. Some thoughts:

  • Rest is good, we need to embrace this.
  • Reality: Day-to-day life is stressful. You have to break-a-way from it at times to breath.
  • Nature is spiritual. You feel more connected to God, and each other.
  • Kids grow quickly, parents have to spend time creating memories, and moments of love and joy.

Asheville is really a great, funky, eclectic city. Lot’s of restaurants, shops, cafes, bookstores, art galleries etc,  great vibe for sure!

Some of our adventures:

1. Hung out at Chimney Rock.
2. Went hiking in Dupont Natural Forest.
3. Spent lots of time in downtown Asheville.
4. Took a drive on Blue Ridge Parkway.

The good news, we spent no cash except for gas, hotels and food. Lot’s of fun for little cash, my kind of get-a-way!

More Updates

Chris Marlow —  August 17, 2009 — 2 Comments

Things are coming along nicely for the Marlow’s. Here here’s a list:

We rented a house in the Historic Oakwood Neighborhood. Our house is a 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 950 SQ FT home 1 mile from downtown. We live in a unique area mixed with all types of races and socio- economic families. We also live two doors down from The Cummings, who lead Lemonade International, we’re also close to Gore & Ramsey, who lead Visio Dei Church.

The rent is month-to-month and inexpensive, which fits our budget. Also, we will be able to use one car for the time being as Necole and I will be able to walk or bus to work and the girls school is less than one mile. We’re really looking forward to living in-the-city and being “present” in our community. We hope to serve and love the city as we live, work and play in-the-city!

This morning I wrapped-up all the paperwork for the girls new school Conn Elementary. Below is a quick description of Conn:

Technology Magnet Program is designed to teach students to be productive members in an everchanging society. Today’s world is a dynamic, high-speed, high-tech society where information available to students is multiplying at an exponential rate. To prepare our children for the future, they must experience active learning which focuses on information skills: gathering, analyzing and communicating information.

Conn’s magnet program prepares our children by providing active learning opportunities every day. Through active learning modules the students work on in-depth projects requiring the use of technology, research, analytical and communication skills. We build on the projects by bringing in guest speakers and taking excursions to community organizations.

The girls will also be involved in dance, art, music and drama as they attend the school, for free, which is right-up-my-ally! I LOVE free :-)

Necole is taking her class today for her cosmetology license and should be working in the next two weeks if all goes well.

Can you believe summer is almost over? I can’t wait for the girls to get back into school, it will be nice for them to get active and engage again, Necole and I will also enjoy having some time back to get things going in hair and for HELP.

This weekend we are heading to beach for a quick last second summer excursion, can’t wait for that! Next week is back to a strict rhythm of work and school.

Raleigh Recap

Chris Marlow —  March 25, 2009 — 1 Comment

I feel like a complete slacker. We arrived back from Raleigh late Sunday evening. Unfortunately we’ve been at war with lice since are arrival home. Anyhow, here are some reflections from our NC trip.

We decided to take a different route. Usually we take the southern route through Atlanta. Not a very fun trip. So this time we decided to take the 40 and go through Arkansas, Tennessee (the Appalachian Mountains are amazing) and NC. Beautiful trip heading through some amazing country.

On the trip we spent time in Asheville and Wilmington. If I ever live in a small city I would live in one of these cities. Lots of culture, great weather and so many things to do!

We arrived in Raleigh at 3PM. Quickly unloaded and headed to Visio Dei at 4PM. The Launch Party started at 5PM, so we had to rush to set-up. I will blog more on this later.

Monday night a handful of us connected at Boylan Bridge Brewpub to chat about all things church with Bill, Mike, Hugh, Vince, Mike and Wes. It was a great time to connect and chat about how we deal with those who live in extreme poverty. I really love that all of these dudes wanted to help each other succeed, that speaks volumes!

Tuesday we hung with our good friend Jodi and Wahba. Great times as always.

Wednesday we had dinner with Bill & Cherie Cummings at their cozy house in downtown Raleigh. Great conversation, food and dessert!

I forgot when, but I also got to hang with Jeff and Gore. They are co-pastors (I think) at Visio Dei. I think Visio is a phenomenal faith community trying to deeply live out the gospel in Raleigh and the world!

I also was able to grab a beer with Tyler Jones, who is the lead pastor at Vintage 21. I love Tyler, we always challenge each other and I think the world of V21. I somehow must get Tyler to Facebook, blog or Twitter.

Thursday and Friday we headed to the beach. We booked a cheap room in Wilmington with an ocean view-lovely! All was going well until I dropped my daughter on the hard sand, I’m such an idiot! I love seeing my girls at the beach, its like a little bit of heaven: sand, sun, water and nothing to do but scream, run and laugh!

Friday night I met Bill Gross. Bill is the pastor of Hope Chapel in Cary/Apex. We had a really good conversation about the church and social issues that we are facing. We also chatted about old times and looked into the future to see what might be. Later that night we hung-out with some friends from the old days. Fun times seeing everyone.

Saturday we loaded the Element and headed home. But first we had to make a stop in Asheville. We took a quick trip on Blue Ridge Parkway, amazing drive!! We also made a detour into some off-roads in the Smokey Mountains, let’s just say that was SCARY!!!

After staying in some ghetto Days Inn MOTEL (ugh, I’m lame) in Jackson TN, we finally made it back to Austin late Sunday evening.

All-in-all it was a fun trip, got to share our vision for HELP, spend time with the family, enjoy beautiful scenery, capture great moments with friends, met new friends doing some awesome work like building water-wells and fighting human trafficking. Really inspiring stories of passionate people who want to make a difference in the lives of others.

Thanks to everyone who journeyed with us while we were in Raleigh!

Off to Raleigh

Chris Marlow —  March 13, 2009 — 1 Comment

In just a few hours we will begin our journey to Raleigh for Spring Break. I’m looking forward to so many things:

1. Spending an entire week with my family. I just wish our pup could come. The girls dropped off Belle last night at some friends, no biggie right…except they ALL came back upset with both of my daughters crying claiming that is not a family vacation without Belle! Beyond that I’ve been so busy and driven that I’ve really missed having fun with my kids. I want to recapture that this week.

2. Hanging with old and new friends: Can’t wait to see old friends again. Necole and I love them and always look forward to seeing our NC friends.

Of course we love meeting new people. So I can’t wait to hang with new friends.

3. Mountains and oceans: Growing up in Nor Cal, living in in the Northwest (Seattle and coastal Oregon) and NC, we love oceans and mountains. It will be good to spend time in Asheville and Wilmington. Two of my favorite cities in the world.

4. Raleigh Launch Party: I love sharing the vision and advocating for HELP and those who live in extreme poverty.

Whoops, I guess I need to finish up the packing. Spring-break starts now!

Being a dad is the best thing ever. By no means am I photogenic, but I think this picture represents the two of us well. Kenzie is a miracle child. The doctors told us she was most likely going to be born with spina bifida. For 6 months we worried about the outcome, stressed about the possibilities and still knowing that life belongs to God and blessing come no matter the health of a child.

Everything worked out perfect. Kenzi was born seven weeks early and spent 3 weeks in ICU. Necole was on bed-rest for six weeks. The day we found out about the high blood issues, which worried the doctors and pointed towards spina bifida was the same day Necole was boarding an airplane, her brother was in an accident and passed away seven days later. That happened six years ago this month-his name was Shane…he was like a brother to me…we will always miss him and no, time heals nothing. We just carry the thoughts, burdens and pain with us.

For instance, my mom passed away of cancer 15 years ago today. She slipped into eternity as I held her one last time. She was my hero, her love for me was unmatched.

Those moment of sadness is painful, but they are also valuable-heaven awaits one day, a reunion with joy will come. This reminds me to live life to the full, do good and serve God. This is why I never hold grudges, forgiveness is automatic and I try to truly love people to the best of my ability!

But life is good, there are moments of joy and happiness, moments of sorrow and sadness, life is mixed with both of those emotions. So we find peace no matter the current circumstances. And occasionally we need to step-back and reframe our lives and remember the blessing that we have.

I caught Kenz singing/worshipping yesterday, so I captured some video footage. It’s always fun to see the kids in their natural element. Enjoy!

Weekend Recap

Chris Marlow —  January 11, 2009 — 1 Comment

The weekend is almost over…say what!

-Friday night we made our way to Stubbs to watch The Rocketboys. Great show and lot’s of fun with Wades and Mangums.
-Yesterday Necole and I decided to take a trip to Enchanted Rock. We drove two hours into the Texas Hill Country and then it took us about 40 minutes to hike up to the top of the rock. We had lot’s of fun, felt good to get away and hang with the family and be outdoors.
- After the hike we headed over to Fredericksburg, which is a quant little town in the Texas Hill Country. We ate at Fredericksburg Brewery. Great beer and good pizza, pretty cool little upscale country city with vineyards, b&b’s and lots of restaurants.
- As we were heading home we wanted a coffee. However most places were already closed. We did manage to find a Christian Coffeeshop. (you knew it was Christian by the three crossed out front-sigh) But they did have a very cool house-turned-into-a-coffeeshop vibe. But truth-be-told…It was the worst latte I’ve had in years.
-This morning we went to Austin Stone. Stew was speaking on mission and community. It’s good  to see a bunch of Vista peeps and the message was great. That church is truly doing some cool things.
-After church we went to lunch at Zocalo with a bunch of people and then headed to Medici for a yummy latte.

Wish the weekends did not end so fast and I wish my house was not a disaster. But hey life is short and you gotta live it up…Now it’s time for dinner…girls in bed…and Jack Bauer.

Pilgrims

Chris Marlow —  January 8, 2009 — 1 Comment

The thought of pilgrimage is very motivating for Necole and I. We’re adventurous at heart and whenever we feel confined we basically go nuts. We love  having a day to day rhythm…We love to be involved in community. We’ve desperately wanted to call a place home.

But we also know we’re pilgrims…journeying in life. We try to be focused on the present, but our thoughts constantly wonder into the future.

So much to do…so many places to see…so many in need. Who cares about a house, nice schools or the so-called “American dream.” Most people who pursue all that stuff seem empty, depressed and stressed-including us.  God has a plan..By His grace he asks us to partner with him to do good, love mercy and walk with him in community with others…It’s the Jesus way…Selfless, pure, on-mission…Jesus, you, me and the journey!

Life is short…there is to much to do, new people to meet, new opportunities to explore, new lands to discover.  How do we live our next 20 years or so…? Like pilgrims on a journey…learning to be missional, loving God, loving others and enjoying life on the way!
